Description

Function and technical context

Marlin Universal Primer acts as an adherent preparatory layer between the hull or metal surface and the antifouling or topcoat paint systems, guaranteeing optimal adhesion in immersion and marine exposure conditions. It is applied to both metal substrates (steel, aluminum, lead) and polyester and composite materials, making it a versatile solution for boat maintenance and renovation work. Its function is sealing and adhesion promoting: without an adequate primer, the top layers of antifouling can come off prematurely, leaving the hull exposed to galvanic corrosion, osmosis and biological fouling. The gray formulation facilitates visual inspection of the uniform coverage before applying successive layers, being especially valued in shipyards and nautical workshops for its compatibility with most marine paint systems on the market.

When to apply or renew this primer?

The primer must be renewed whenever the existing antifouling is mechanically removed until the substrate is exposed, when areas with blisters, peeling or loss of adhesion of the paint system appear, or before any repair that affects the integrity of the base layers. It is recommended to check the condition of the paint system at the beginning of each nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching, and reapply primer to all repaired or sanded areas before applying antifouling. Correctly applying the primer in each maintenance cycle is the most effective preventive measure to avoid osmosis and corrosion problems that, detected late, can lead to high-cost structural repairs.
