Description
Function and technical context
The trim motor is the electrohydraulic component responsible for regulating the angle of inclination of the outboard motor with respect to the transom, allowing the trim and tilt to be adjusted to optimize the performance of the boat according to the navigation conditions. It acts within the hydraulic trim system, generating the necessary pressure to extend or retract the cylinder that varies the position of the engine. A trim motor in poor condition can prevent adjustment of the propulsion angle, cause loss of fuel efficiency, propeller cavitation or even the inability to lift the motor out of the water to protect or transport it. This component is especially critical in E-TEC engines from the Johnson/Evinrude range, where the trim system is integrated with the engine management electronics.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a defective trim motor are: the motor does not go up or down when the trim button is pressed, slow or irregular movement of the trim, electrical humming noise without hydraulic displacement, or the motor that goes down on its own while sailing due to loss of internal pressure. It is recommended to check the condition of the trim motor during each seasonal maintenance, inspecting electrical connections, hydraulic fluid level and possible leaks in the cylinders. Replacing the trim motor preventively at the first symptoms prevents being immobilized at sea with the motor blocked in an inappropriate position, which could cause damage to the stern or compromise the safety of navigation.
