Function and technical context

The oil pump is the heart of the lubrication system in Yamaha four-stroke engines. Its function is to extract oil from the crankcase and distribute it under pressure to all the critical points of the engine: bearings, pistons, distribution gears and internal cylinder walls. Without efficient lubrication, accelerated wear of these surfaces occurs in a matter of hours, generating excessive friction, loss of compression and, ultimately, engine seizure. This part works continuously throughout the entire engine operation, automatically adapting the oil flow according to the rpm, so its correct operation is essential for the durability of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The oil pump requires replacement when symptoms appear such as abnormally low oil pressure (indicated on the gauge on the dashboard), metallic noises in the engine due to lack of lubrication, or when it is detected that there is no oil circulation through the filter during start-up. Although there is no strict change interval in operating hours like that of filters, an inspection at each seasonal maintenance allows premature wear to be identified. Preventively replacing this part when a major inspection is carried out or after detecting the first signs of anomaly avoids substantially more expensive repairs, such as complete rebuilding of the engine due to seizure.
