Description
Function and Technical Context
The oil filter is an essential component of the lubrication system in Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines of the 10, 15 and 70 HP series, as well as in 15 HP Suzuki engines compatible with reference 434839. Its mission is to retain metallic particles, combustion residues and suspended contaminants that circulate with the oil, preventing them from reaching the bearings, crankshaft and other engine friction surfaces. A filter in good condition ensures that the oil maintains its lubricating and cooling capacity throughout the entire internal circuit, reducing premature wear of moving components. If the filter becomes clogged or deteriorated, oil pressure may fall below the safe threshold, causing excessive friction between parts, increased internal temperature and, in extreme cases, engine seizure away from port.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of an exhausted oil filter are the illumination of the low oil pressure warning light, a dry metallic sound on cold start or visibly black and thick oil on the level dipstick. As a general rule of preventive maintenance on outboard engines, it is recommended to change the oil filter with each engine oil change, usually every season or every 100 hours of navigation, whichever comes first. Performing this change systematically is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid serious failures in the lubrication circuit that could leave you stranded at sea.
