Description

Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture inside each cylinder of the outboard engine, being the central element of the ignition system. A spark plug in correct condition guarantees complete and efficient combustion, which directly translates into maximum engine performance, fuel savings and lower gas emissions. When the spark plug degrades, the spark loses intensity or does not occur regularly, which compromises the operation of the engine in all navigation conditions. The NGK BUHX reference is manufactured with materials with high thermal and electrical resistance, designed to withstand the specific demands of outboard engines in marine environments, where humidity, salt and temperature variations are constant factors of accelerated wear.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged spark plug in an outboard engine include difficult or failed starting, jerking and loss of idle speed, high fuel consumption, irregular engine vibrations and, in advanced cases, the inability to maintain planes. As a general preventative maintenance rule, it is recommended that spark plugs be inspected at each seasonal inspection and replaced every 100 hours of operation or once a year, whichever comes first. Changing spark plugs preventively is one of the most economical and effective interventions to avoid unforeseen stoppages in the water and protect more expensive components of the ignition system.
