Function and technical context

The spark plug acts as the final element of the ignition system in Otto cycle petrol engines: it generates the electric spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber at the precise moment dictated by the control unit or the distributor. It works within the ignition system in close relationship with the high voltage cables, the coil and the platinum or electronic ignition module. In the marine environment, spark plugs are subjected to more aggressive thermal cycles, saline humidity and load variations typical of navigation, which requires a component with a high-quality ceramic insulator and precision nickel electrode to maintain stable spark throughout the engine speed range. If the spark plug fails or shows advanced wear, the immediate result is incomplete combustion that results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption, abnormal vibrations, difficulty starting and even damage to the catalyst or cylinder head due to uncontrolled detonation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged spark plug are jerks or jerks in acceleration, irregular or unstable idle, engine that does not start smoothly, visible increase in petrol consumption and, in advanced cases, black smoke from the exhaust indicative of an unburned mixture. For marine petrol engines, it is recommended to check the spark plugs at least during each seasonal maintenance and replace them at the interval indicated by the engine manufacturer, usually between 100 and 200 hours of operation depending on the type of navigation and the conditions of use. Replacing the spark plugs preventively before each season is one of the lowest-cost interventions that provides greater safety, since a misfire at sea can leave the boat without propulsion at the worst possible moment.
