Function and technical context
The NGK XR5 spark plug acts as an ignition element in the combustion system of the marine petrol engine, generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the expansion chamber. Its precision nickel electrode ensures consistent discharge with each cycle, resulting in stable rpm and clean, controlled combustion. Poor ignition causes noticeable power losses, increased fuel consumption, irregular vibrations and starting difficulties, especially in high humidity conditions typical of the marine environment. When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn marine spark plug are: difficult or failed starting, jerking and rough idling, noticeable loss of thrust at full load, and increased fuel consumption without apparent cause. In outboard engines with intensive use, it is recommended to check the spark plugs every 100 hours of navigation or at the beginning of each season, replacing them preventively if the electrode shows visible erosion, carbon deposits or the electrode gap has changed with respect to the adjustment value. Changing the NGK XR5 spark plug preventively is the most economical intervention to avoid an engine stop at sea or while sailing.
