Description

Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of the outboard engine. It operates in the ignition system of the gasoline engine, acting as the endpoint of the high-voltage circuit generated by the ignition coil. A spark plug in poor condition causes incomplete or irregular combustion, which directly results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption, starting difficulties, and in advanced cases, misfiring in specific cylinders that can damage the catalytic converter or cause unexpected engine shutdowns during navigation. The NGK BUZ8H reference is designed to meet the specific thermal and electrical demands of outboard engines for which it is indicated, ensuring efficient combustion in each cycle.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or defective spark plug in an outboard engine are: difficult or irregular starting, hesitation and loss of acceleration at low RPM, notable increase in fuel consumption, and unusual engine vibrations. In outboard engines it is recommended to replace spark plugs every season or every 100 operating hours, whichever comes first, especially in engines that operate under high load conditions or in saltwater where corrosion accelerates electrode deterioration. Changing spark plugs preventively at the start of each season is one of the most cost-effective maintenance interventions: it prevents engine failure breakdowns at sea and ensures optimal outboard performance.
