NGK SPARK PLUG GOOD
Description
Function and technical context
The spark plug is the element responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of the outboard engine, triggering the power cycle. It works in the engine ignition system, subject to extreme conditions of temperature, pressure and vibrations typical of the marine environment. A bad spark plug causes incomplete or irregular combustion, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and difficulties in starting. In outboard engines, where reliability on the water is critical, keeping the spark plugs in perfect condition is not an option, but a technical necessity.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in an outboard include jerks or misfiring at different rpm, unstable idle, difficulty starting when cold, and the presence of black smoke from the exhaust indicative of a mixture not burned properly. As a general preventative maintenance rule, it is recommended to inspect and replace spark plugs every season or every 100 hours of boating, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plug preventively during annual maintenance is the simplest and most economical measure to guarantee safe starts and avoid breakdowns at a distance from the port.
