The NGK BR5HS spark plug is the component of the ignition system responsible for generating the electric spark that initiates combustion in the cylinder chamber of two- and four-stroke outboard engines. A worn or incorrectly gapped electrode causes misfires, incomplete combustion and can lead to serious damage to pistons and exhaust manifolds. The most common signs of spark plug deterioration are difficulty starting when cold, jerking or uneven acceleration, loss of sustained power, and rough running at cruising speed; symptoms that are usually aggravated by the use of low quality fuel or two-stroke oil mixtures. It is recommended to inspect the state of the electrode and the separation at each seasonal maintenance, proceeding with preventive replacement every two seasons of intensive use or in the event of any sign of visible erosion on the electrodes. Performing the change preventively avoids unwanted stops at sea and protects the rest of the ignition system against overloads derived from a spark plug in poor condition.
