Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component of the ignition system responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the engine cylinder. It works in the ignition system of the combustion engine, acting in sync with the ignition coil and the distributor or CDI system to guarantee complete combustion in each cycle. A bad spark plug causes irregular combustion, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption, starting difficulties and increased gas emissions. On Honda outboard engines, proper spark plug operation is especially critical to maintaining engine response under all boating conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or defective spark plug are: jerking or misfiring during acceleration, difficult starting or requiring several attempts, rough idling and a visible increase in petrol consumption. For outboard engines in regular use, it is recommended that the spark plugs be inspected at each seasonal inspection and replaced approximately every 100 hours of operation or annually, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plugs preventively is one of the lowest cost interventions that has the greatest impact on the reliability of the engine in water.
