Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BP7HS spark plug is part of the ignition system of the outboard petrol engine, being responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber. Made with reinforced ceramic and nickel electrode, it is designed to withstand the vibration, humidity and temperature conditions typical of the marine environment. An optimized electrode separation guarantees a stable and constant arc, which translates into efficient combustion, lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. If the spark plug deteriorates or fails, the engine may have difficult starts, loss of power, irregular running or even complete stoppage of the affected cylinder, especially dangerous situations in navigation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or bad spark plug are difficult starting when cold, jerking or jerking of the engine at idle, increased fuel consumption and the presence of black or bluish smoke in the exhaust. In petrol marine engines, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal inspection and replace them approximately every 100 hours of navigation, or when electrode erosion, carbon deposits or cracks in the ceramic insulator are detected. Changing the spark plug preventively is one of the most economical and effective maintenance interventions to avoid breakdowns at sea that can compromise the safety of the boat.
