Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BP6HS spark plug is a component of the ignition system that generates the electric spark responsible for igniting the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder, triggering the combustion cycle that moves the piston. This is a standard type spark plug with a short thread, designed specifically for small and medium displacement two-stroke outboard engines, where thermal and pressure conditions require precise and constant ignition. Within the ignition system, it works in coordination with the coil, platinum or CDI module to produce a spark with the proper energy and timing each cycle. When this component degrades, combustion becomes incomplete or erratic, directly compromising the performance, fuel economy and reliability of the propellant in navigation.

When to replace this part?

The clearest signs that the spark plug has reached the end of its useful life are difficulty starting the engine when cold, misfiring under full load, abnormal vibrations in the block, and the presence of carbon deposits or visible erosion on the central or side electrode upon visual inspection. In two-stroke outboard engines, it is recommended to check the spark plug every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each nautical season, replacing it if there is any sign of wear on the electrode or contamination of the insulator. Anticipating failure with a preventive change at the beginning of the season is the simplest and most economical way to avoid an unexpected breakdown at sea.
