Description

Function and technical context

The NGK IZFR7M spark plug is part of the marine engine's ignition system, being responsible for generating the electric spark that initiates the combustion of the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Its iridium electrode and the geometry of its ionization chamber are specifically developed to offer a precise and repeatable spark even under the conditions of high humidity, vibration and load variations typical of navigation. A spark plug failure directly translates into difficult starts, jerks during acceleration, increased fuel consumption and, in advanced cases, notable loss of power that can compromise the safety of the boat. The internal resistance of the spark plug also reduces electromagnetic interference, protecting the electronic navigation instruments installed on board.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged marine spark plug include difficulty starting when cold, irregular engine idling, loss of response during acceleration and unjustified high fuel consumption; In visual inspection, the eroded electrode, carbon deposits or cracked porcelain can be seen. For outboard and intramotor engines with regular use, it is recommended to check the condition of the spark plugs at each seasonal maintenance and replace them at the interval indicated by the engine manufacturer, generally between 100 and 300 hours of operation depending on the type of engine. Replacing the spark plugs preventively, before they show visible failures, avoids unforeseen stops at sea and guarantees a clean ignition throughout the sailing season.
