The bulkhead is a fundamental component of the marine cooling system that acts as a seal or gasket in the engine casing. Its main function is to prevent coolant water leaks and ensure efficient circulation of the cooling liquid through the internal passages of the engine. It is a critical part that works under constant pressure in variable temperature environments, ensuring that the cooling circuit remains airtight and the engine maintains an optimal operating temperature. Without a cylinder in good condition, the engine experiences coolant losses, progressive overheating and the risk of seawater entering areas where it should not circulate.

When to replace this part?

The bulk should be inspected at every seasonal inspection, especially after seasons of heavy saltwater use. Symptoms of wear include small coolant leaks visible around the gasket, abnormal increases in engine temperature detected in the dashboard gauges, or the presence of water in the oil pan after a period of navigation. Although there is no universal fixed time interval, cooling system seals and gaskets tend to degrade between 5 and 8 years of regular use, so their preventive replacement is recommended during major overhauls to avoid costly repairs resulting from overheating or internal corrosion of the engine at sea.
