Function and technical context

The key is a critical precision component in the timing and ignition system of Mercury, Mariner and Mercruiser engines. This part ensures the synchronized transmission of the rotary movement between the crankshaft and the distribution elements, guaranteeing the exact alignment of the valve opening and closing times. A failure in this key causes misalignment of the camshaft, loss of ignition timing, drastic reduction in power and, in severe cases, internal engine damage due to collision of valves with pistons.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of wear include abnormal vibrations in the engine, difficulty starting, progressive loss of revolutions and metallic sounds coming from the engine block. Although the cotter pins are designed for long life, it is advisable to inspect them during each seasonal inspection and replace them preventively if any signs of loosening or wear are detected. Preventive replacement avoids costly repairs resulting from misalignment of the distribution and guarantees optimal operation of the ignition system in high-altitude navigation.
