Function and technical context

The anode plate acts as an electrochemical sacrificial element in the marine engine cooling circuit, protecting itself before the critical metal surfaces of the saltwater system. Strategically installed in the coolant flow path, it prevents galvanic corrosion that would otherwise degrade cylindrical blocks, cylinder heads, heat exchangers and internal pipes. Without this component, contact between dissimilar metals in a saline environment causes accelerated oxidation that compromises the tightness of the system and thermal transfer, leading to engine overheating and the entry of seawater into the cylinders.

When to replace this part?

Anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each boating season and replaced when wear has consumed approximately 50% of their visible mass, indicating that their sacrificial capacity is approaching exhaustion. Consumption accelerates noticeably in waters with high saline content, sedimentation or the presence of external galvanic currents (moorings close to metal structures or port areas with active corrosion). Preventatively replacing the plate before it corrodes completely is essential to prevent corrosion from transferring to the engine, which would require costly repairs and time in the dock.
