The head gasket is a critical component of the marine engine cooling system, responsible for tightly sealing the cylinder head against the engine block. This closure prevents coolant leaks and the infiltration of salt water into the internal circulation galleries, maintaining the integrity and tightness of the cooling circuit. Its deterioration compromises the thermal efficiency of the propellant and can cause progressive overheating, accelerated internal corrosion and serious mechanical breakdown, especially in saltwater vessels where material degradation is significantly accelerated.

When to replace this part?

Indicators of failure include loss of coolant without obvious cause, white corrosion spots around the cylinder head, abnormal overheating even with fresh antifreeze, and presence of water in the crankcase. It is recommended to check its condition during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively every 5 to 8 years or if there are signs of corrosion, deformation or leaks. A preventive replacement avoids costly head or engine block repairs that can leave the boat inoperable at sea.
