Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the anti-corrosion protection of marine engines exposed to salt water. Made of more reactive material than engine components, it gradually dissolves in place of the aluminum, iron and steel of the cooling system and engine casing, preventing galvanic corrosion. This electrochemical process is especially vital in vessels operating in saltwater environments, where salinity exponentially accelerates metallic deterioration. Periodic replacement of the anode is the most economical preventive measure to extend the life of the motor and avoid internal structural failures.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the beginning of each navigation season and replaced when it shows visible erosion of more than 50% or appears completely consumed. Indirect symptoms of a depleted anode include white spots or corrosion deposits on the outer casing of the motor, reduced performance for no apparent reason, or water penetration into areas that normally remain dry. An annual preventive change is recommended in boats with intensive use in salt water, or every two seasons in occasional navigation, to guarantee continuous protection without risks of advanced corrosion.
