Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of marine engines. It is installed in the area of ​​the engine casing where it comes into direct contact with salt water, acting as an electrochemical barrier that prevents galvanic corrosion of critical metal parts of the engine block. In Mercury Verado engines, this anode wears out and is progressively consumed by attracting and neutralizing corrosive ions in seawater, thus protecting the integrity of cylinders, cooling ducts and internal aluminum components that would otherwise suffer accelerated oxidation and loss of sealing.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be checked at the end of each boating season or after 200-300 hours of operation; If they are worn to more than 50% of their volume or show severe spot corrosion, it is time to change them. The absence of a healthy anode allows galvanic corrosion to directly attack the motor, causing cooling losses, internal leaks and mechanical failures that are costly to repair. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical practice and guarantees reliable protection throughout the entire navigation campaign.
