The cooling anode acts as a sacrificial element within the cooling circuit of the Volvo Penta Sail Drive 100, interposing its metallic mass between the corrosive medium and the internal components of the engine block. It works integrated into the water cooling system, where the presence of electrolytes dissolved in salt water generates galvanic currents capable of degrading aluminum alloys and other ferrous metals. Without this component in good condition, galvanic corrosion progressively attacks the internal surfaces of the cooling circuit, potentially causing blockages, water leaks or irreversible deterioration of the engine block.
