Function and Technical Context

The water pump impeller is the key rotating component within the raw water cooling system of Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines. Manufactured from flexible rubber, its blades draw water from the outside toward the internal engine passages, ensuring that the block and cylinder head remain at safe operating temperature. A deteriorated impeller drastically reduces cooling flow rate, which can lead to severe overheating, cylinder head gasket damage and even complete engine failure. This component operates under demanding conditions of abrasion, heat and continuous pressure, so its condition is decisive for the reliability of the complete propulsion system. Compatible with OMC references 432941, 0432941 and 0765350, and equivalent to Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser reference 878838.

When to Replace This Part?

The clearest symptoms of a worn impeller are the temperature alarm activated, absence or reduction of cooling water discharge from the outlet fitting and progressive engine overheating during navigation. It is recommended to replace the impeller every 200-300 hours of operation or, at minimum, every two boating seasons, regardless of its visual appearance, since the rubber blades lose elasticity and efficiency before visibly breaking. Changing the impeller preventively at each seasonal service is the most economical measure to avoid serious breakdown offshore.
