Description

Function and technical context

The Champion QL78C spark plug is part of the ignition system of petrol engines for marine use, being directly responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Its correct operation determines the combustion efficiency, the energy performance of the engine and the fuel consumption at each outing on the water. A damaged spark plug or one with a worn electrode causes misfires, jerks during acceleration, difficult starts and a notable increase in fuel consumption. In outboard and stationary marine engines, where temperature and humidity conditions are demanding, the quality of the spark plug is a critical factor to guarantee ignition reliability throughout the engine speed range.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a marine spark plug at the end of its useful life include irregular or difficult starts, loss of power at full throttle, unstable idling, and higher than usual petrol consumption; In advanced cases, the engine may stop unexpectedly while sailing. As a general rule of nautical maintenance, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every season or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first, since the marine environment accelerates the corrosion of the electrodes. Replacing the spark plug preventively at the beginning of each season is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid an ignition failure at sea.
