ISOTHERMAL BOILER ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode for Isoterm water heater (ref. TEN01450) is a cathodic protection element installed inside the nautical boiler tank, whose mission is to concentrate on itself the galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal body of the heater. This component works in the onboard domestic hot water system, where the combination of fresh or salt water with metals of different electrochemical potential generates a continuous electrolytic process. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, the boiler tank is left unprotected and suffers internal perforations due to corrosion, which can lead to water losses, mixing of circuits or total breakdown of the heater, with the consequent cost of replacing the whole.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the boiler anode is exhausted is the appearance of rust stains in the hot water, metallic odors or even small leaks in the heater casing. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning of each nautical season and replace it when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, without waiting for it to disappear completely. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual inspection is the most economical measure to prolong the useful life of the Isoterm heater and avoid a major repair while sailing.
