Function and technical context

The impeller cover is part of the outboard water cooling system, acting as a seal for the chamber that houses the water pump impeller. Its task is to maintain the hydraulic pressure necessary for the impeller to expel cooling water towards the engine block continuously and efficiently. A cover in poor condition causes internal leaks in the pump, reduced coolant flow and, consequently, overheating of the engine with the risk of serious damage to cylinder heads and pistons. This part works in conditions of high humidity, pressure and temperature, so its integrity is decisive for the reliability of the drive assembly.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of deterioration in the impeller cover are the appearance of micro-cracks or deformations due to thermal fatigue, loss of tightness in the water pump chamber and a visible reduction in the output water jet on the engine cooling indicator. It is recommended to inspect this cover each time the impeller is periodically replaced, an operation that manufacturers suggest undertaking every 200-300 hours of navigation or at the beginning of each season. Changing the cover preventively along with the impeller and seals prevents breakdowns due to overheating while sailing, the repair of which is considerably more expensive.
