Function and technical context

The impeller cover is the component that closes and seals the seawater pump chamber in the outboard cooling system, housing and guiding the rubber impeller that drives water flow to the engine. It works in the seawater cooling circuit, being the structural element that maintains the internal pressure necessary for the impeller to function correctly and guarantee the constant flow of coolant. If this cover has cracks, deformations or poor sealing, the cooling flow is compromised, which could lead to engine overheating, activation of the thermal alarm or severe damage to the cylinder head and gaskets. Its periodic replacement is especially relevant in Suzuki engines of the DT and DF series, where the integrity of the entire water pump depends on the cover-impeller-casing assembly.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged impeller cover are the reduction or absence of the cooling water jet in the discharge nozzle, the unusual increase in engine temperature and the appearance of abnormal vibrations in the area of the water pump. It is recommended to inspect this cover every time the impeller is serviced, usually every 300-400 hours of navigation or every two seasons at most. Replacing the cover along with the impeller at each maintenance intervention prevents breakdowns at sea and prolongs the useful life of the entire cooling pump.
