Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes in plate format constitute the first line of defense of metal hulls and submerged structures against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in the marine environment. This plate anode acts as a sacrificial galvanic element: being made of an alloy with a higher negative electrochemical potential than the metals it protects (steel, aluminum, bronze), it attracts corrosion to itself and preserves intact the structural integrity of the hull, tail shaft, rudders and other submerged appendages. The cathodic protection it provides is essential in both salt water and fresh or brackish water, environments where the potential difference between different metals accelerates electrochemical degradation. Its direct installation on flat surfaces of the hull or steel or aluminum structures allows effective coverage of large-area exposed areas, something that cylindrical or collar anodes cannot guarantee on their own. Without an anode in good condition, corrosion advances silently on the structural parts, potentially compromising the tightness of the hull and generating high-cost breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a plate anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when you see the anode reduced by half or with its surface very irregular and exhausted, it no longer offers sufficient protection and the noble metals of the boat are exposed. During grounding inspections, it is also common to detect pitting or incipient erosion on the hull or rudder when the anode has been in service for too long without inspection. As a general rule, sacrificial anodes should be inspected at each docking or seasonal maintenance and replaced at least once a year in high salinity areas, or sooner if consumption is high. Renewing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid structural repairs to the hull or replacements of appendages that multiply the cost by ten.
