Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes in hull plates are key elements in the cathodic protection of vessels, acting as an electrochemical barrier between the metal of the hull and the seawater. This type of flat anode is installed directly on the hull, fixed by screws, to concentrate on itself the galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack rudders, propellers, shafts and other submerged metal surfaces. Its function is to "sacrifice" itself in a controlled manner, progressively oxidizing to protect the metal structures of greatest structural value of the boat. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise the integrity of the hull and appendages within a few seasons, especially in salty or brackish waters with high electrical conductivity.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that a hull anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost 50% to 60% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, as its protective capacity is insufficient. It is recommended to inspect the iron anodes at least once a season, preferably at the annual beaching, and replace them whenever they show considerable wear, cracks or grayish-white crystallized surfaces. Changing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical practice compared to the cost of repairing corrosion damage to the hull or appendages.
