OVAL ANODE 3Kg.
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are part of the cathodic protection system of the hull and the submerged metal elements of the vessel. Its mission is to act as a sacrificial metal: being electrochemically more active than the steel, bronze or aluminum of the hull, propeller and shafts, it corrodes preferentially and prevents galvanic corrosion from attacking the structural and propulsion parts. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly damage the hull, axle mounts or hardware in a surprisingly short time, especially in salt or brackish waters. This oval-shaped anode is fixed directly to the surface of the hull using screws, guaranteeing good electrical contact and uniform dissolution throughout the sailing season.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it is reduced to less than half, its protective capacity drops drastically and the noble metals of the boat are exposed to electrolytic corrosion. It is recommended to inspect the hull anodes at each beaching or, at least, at the beginning and end of each sailing season, since their consumption rate depends directly on the salinity of the water and the time spent at sea. Replacing the anode preventively during grounding maintenance is the most cost-effective practice: the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to repairing a corroded shaft or a hull damaged by galvanic pitting.
