Description

Function and technical context

Flap anodes are cathodic protection elements specifically designed to be installed in the flaps or hydraulic interceptors of vessels, areas that are especially vulnerable to galvanic corrosion due to being in permanent contact with salt or brackish water. Their function is to act as a sacrificial anode, attracting electrochemical corrosion to themselves and thus protecting the adjacent metal surfaces of the flaps, which would otherwise suffer accelerated degradation. This component, with dimensions 300x150x28 mm, covers a generous surface to guarantee effective protection in medium-large flaps, being critical to maintain the structural integrity and correct functioning of the stern trim and stabilization systems. If the anode is completely depleted without being replaced in time, the metal flaps are exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can lead to pitting, structural weakening and mechanical failures in the hydraulic actuators, with consequent high repair costs.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the flap anode must be replaced is the loss of between 50% and 70% of its mass: when the anode appears noticeably reduced, with cracks or with metal areas of the flaps already visibly attacked by oxidation, replacement is urgent. It is recommended to inspect and renew the sacrificial anodes at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat goes dry for inspection, since their useful life depends directly on the sailing time and the type of water (salt water accelerates consumption compared to fresh water). Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely exhausted is the most economical and safest practice: prolonging its use to the limit exposes the flaps and their mechanisms to irreversible damage that multiplies the cost of repair.
