Description

Function and technical context

Boiler anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed on marine boilers and metal surfaces submerged or in contact with seawater, acting as sacrificial metal that corrodes in place of the structural components of the system. This zinc anode with dimensions 300x200x20 mm works within the on-board cooling or heat exchange system, protecting it from galvanic corrosion caused by the difference in electrical potential between different metals in an electrolytic medium such as salt or brackish water. Its absence or excessive wear causes corrosion to directly attack the walls of the boiler, the heat exchangers or the metal fixings of the circuit, compromising the tightness of the system and potentially causing serious failures that are difficult to repair in navigation.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that a boiler anode has exhausted its protective capacity is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point it must be replaced immediately before galvanic corrosion begins to affect adjacent components; In advanced cases, pitting or oxidation marks may be seen on the surface of the boiler or on the circuit connections. It is recommended to inspect this type of anodes at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat is docked for maintenance, since their rate of wear depends directly on the salinity of the water and the electrical activity of the mooring environment. Replacing the anode preventatively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid costly boiler or marine heat exchanger repairs.
