Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements that are installed on the hull, shaft and submerged metal components of the vessel to prevent galvanic corrosion. This anode for Caterpillar engines works as a sacrificial mass: being made of a metal with a lower electrochemical potential, it corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the structural components of the engine and transmission. Without adequate cathodic protection, critical metal parts such as propellers, shafts, turbines and casings are exposed to the electrolytic action of salt or brackish water, which can cause irreversible deterioration in a very short time.
When to replace this part?
An anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, a visible sign that the sacrificial material is exhausted and no longer protects effectively. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once per nautical season and replace them preventively at each annual beaching, regardless of their apparent condition if the vessel operates in waters with high conductivity. Changing the anode before it is completely consumed is the most economical way to prevent corrosion of high-cost components such as shafts or propellers.
