Function and Technical Context

The fuel pump is the component responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the carburetor, maintaining the constant flow that the engine needs to generate power. It operates within the fuel supply system of 2-stroke outboard engines, typically driven by crankcase gas pressure through a flexible diaphragm. Its correct operation is decisive for rpm stability and engine response under all navigating conditions; a worn pump causes fuel supply deficiencies that result in hard starting, surging at different speeds or unexpected engine shutdown. This unit, with reference OMC 438562 / REC1399-07351, is manufactured for 15 HP applications in the Johnson range, and is also equivalent to Mercury/Mariner/Mercruiser references 8M0175311 and 8M6010286.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a worn fuel pump are hard cold starting, progressive power loss at full load, engine stumble during hard acceleration and sudden shutdown after periods of continuous operation. The internal diaphragm hardens or cracks over time, especially if the engine has been stored with old fuel, so it is advisable to inspect the pump during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively at any sign of irregular fuel supply. Changing the fuel pump before it fails completely prevents being stranded at sea and protects the carburetor from damage due to lack of fuel lubrication.
