Function and technical context

The head gasket is the critical sealing element that ensures tightness between the cylinder head and the engine block, preventing the passage of combustion gases, coolant and oil between both surfaces. It works in the engine's combustion system, supporting extreme pressures generated during the explosion of the air-petrol mixture. Its integrity is essential to maintain engine compression, prevent coolant leaks into the combustion chamber and prevent contamination of the oil with coolant liquid, which would seriously deteriorate the lubricant and the bearings.

Symptoms of failure include loss of power, engine overheating, bubbles in the radiator, milky oil emulsion (mixture with coolant) and white smoke in the exhaust.
