The stainless steel exhaust elbow is the component that redirects the combustion gases from the exhaust manifold to the seawater cooling system, where the cooling water mixes with the hot gases before being expelled outside the boat. The most common symptoms of a deteriorated exhaust elbow are the appearance of visible rust or corrosion on the part, water or gas leaks at the junction with the manifold, abnormal noise in the exhaust or overheating of the engine without apparent cause in the cooling circuit. In intensive use engines, it is recommended to inspect the exhaust elbow during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the internal condition of the duct, where limescale deposits and cavitation erosion are the main agents of wear. Preventive replacement at the first signs of corrosion or thinning of the wall prevents major breakdowns during navigation and protects the engine from irreversible damage due to water ingress.
