Function and technical context

Antifreeze for marine engines acts within the fresh water cooling circuit, regulating the temperature of the engine block and protecting it against the most demanding conditions of the nautical environment. Unlike automotive products, this yellow formulation is specifically developed to resist the aggressiveness of the marine environment, where the presence of salt, constant humidity and severe thermal cycles accelerate the internal corrosion of liners, fresh water pumps, heat exchangers and metal pipes. Its function is not limited to preventing freezing during winter stops: the corrosion inhibitors it incorporates create a protective layer on the internal surfaces of aluminum, cast iron and copper, preventing the formation of oxides, limescale deposits and pitting that compromise the tightness of the circuit. A deteriorated cooling circuit can lead to engine overheating, loss of power, damage to the head gasket or, in serious cases, the complete disablement of the propeller while sailing.

When to replace this product?

Marine antifreeze loses effectiveness over time even if the engine has not suffered any incident: the corrosion inhibitors are progressively depleted, the pH of the coolant becomes acidic and the liquid stops adequately protecting the metals in the circuit. The most common symptoms of degraded coolant are the appearance of reddish or brown deposits when bleeding the circuit, an acidic smell when opening the expansion tank cap, or small traces of rust on the hoses and fittings. The recommended replacement interval for this product is every 2 years, regardless of accumulated browsing hours; Performing the change preventively at each biennial inspection is the most economical way to avoid costly breakdowns due to internal corrosion or overheating during the season.
