Function and Technical Context
This gasket acts as a sealing element between two surfaces of the outboard motor, preventing fluid or gas leaks at the corresponding joint. Depending on its location within the block or cylinder head, it may function within the cooling system, the lubrication circuit, or the cylinder head and cover gaskets, and its structural integrity is essential for the proper operation of the assembly. Deterioration of the gasket causes pressure loss, water ingress into critical areas, or oil leaks, with the consequent risk of overheating or severe damage to the engine’s internal components. Its timely replacement is one of the most effective preventive measures for maintaining the engine’s reliability under demanding operating conditions. Compatible with Johnson and Evinrude engines in the 150, 155, 175, 185, 200, and 235 hp series, among others, as well as with equivalent Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser part numbers 802057 and OMC 0323214 / 323214.
When should this part be replaced?
The most common symptoms of a deteriorated gasket include the presence of moisture or traces of oil at the joints between the covers and the block, loss of pressure in the affected circuit, or the appearance of foam in the oil indicating a mixture with water. It is recommended to visually inspect the gaskets during every seasonal maintenance check and replace them whenever the corresponding cover is removed, as the sealing material loses its elastic recovery after each compression. Replacing the gasket as a preventive measure during any engine service prevents costly secondary failures and ensures the assembly remains leak-free from the first start-up.
