Description
Function and technical context
The medium 10 micron Racor filter (reference RAC2040TM-OR / 3838852) acts as a separation barrier in the fuel supply circuit, retaining solid particles, sediments and water emulsified in the diesel before they reach the injection pump and injectors. It works within the fuel supply system, sandwiched between the tank and the high pressure of the injection circuit, protecting the precision components of the injection train against contamination. Its 10 micron filtration threshold ensures effective fuel cleaning without excessively restricting flow, which is especially critical in large displacement Volvo Penta engines such as the TAMD, D and TAD series. A deteriorated or clogged filter can cause pressure drops in the fuel circuit, loss of power, poor starts and, in extreme cases, irreversible damage to injectors and high pressure pump. Its blue body and standard Racor connection thread facilitate quick identification in the engine room and installation without modifications to existing filtration ports.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate that the filter element must be changed are: difficulty starting when cold, irregularities in idling, progressive loss of power at full speed or the fuel pressure warning light on the instrument panel coming on. As a general rule, Racor fuel filters should be replaced every 250–500 hours of operation or at least once a season, always anticipating the period of greatest use. In areas with fuel of irregular quality or vessels that remain inactive for a long time, it is recommended to replace it preventively at the beginning of each season to avoid navigation breakdowns that could compromise the safety of the vessel and lead to costly afloat assistance.
