Function and technical context

The propulsion tail is the mechanical assembly that transmits the engine's power to the propeller, integrating the lubrication, cooling and steering system in a compact unit. On outboard engines and stern platforms, it acts as a critical connection point between the engine block and propeller, simultaneously housing the drive shaft, gear change sprockets, and fresh water cooling passages. Its deterioration generates loss of thrust, salt water entering the transmission, premature gear wear and, in severe cases, complete engine failure during navigation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms include abnormal vibrations in reverse gear, progressive loss of lubrication (oil with a milky appearance or presence of water), metallic noises in the gear area and difficulty changing gears. This type of assembly requires annual visual inspection and preventive replacement if it presents cracks in the casing, advanced corrosion in the water outlet area, or if the motor has been hit by submerged objects. Preventatively replacing the tail before a heavy sailing season prevents sudden breakdown at sea and costly dry-dock repairs.
