Function and technical context

The bilge oil absorber is an environmental management and active maintenance item designed to retain hydrocarbons – engine oil, fuel and other petroleum products – that accumulate on the bottom of the vessel before they can be pumped out with the bilge water. It acts directly on the bilge system, which is the lowest point of the hull where oil, fuel and water leaks from the engine, transmission and other sources converge. Its floating design with a fastening knot ensures that it remains in the contact zone with hydrocarbons, allowing selective absorption that retains contaminants while clean water can be evacuated through the bilge pump without violating maritime environmental regulations. Without this type of absorbent, bilge pumping directly discharges a polluting mixture into the sea, which in addition to being illegal can lead to serious penalties and damage to the marine ecosystem.

When to replace this part?

The bilge absorber should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season, as well as after any fuel handling or oil change on board. The clearest sign that it has reached the limit of its capacity is visible saturation: the float has a uniform dark color and has approximately reached its maximum absorption capacity of 1.89 liters of hydrocarbons, at which point it loses all retention effectiveness. It is recommended to replace it preventively before each season - or more frequently on boats with intensive use - to ensure compliance with spill regulations and prevent the bilge pump from expelling water contaminated with oil or fuel into the sea.
