Description

Function and technical context

The Champion RV8C spark plug is part of the ignition system of the marine petrol engine, being directly responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Its role within the combustion cycle is critical: without precise and consistent ignition, the engine loses timing, efficiency and power. Champion has designed this spark plug to withstand the conditions of the marine environment, where salinity, high humidity and extreme thermal cycles accelerate the deterioration of ignition components. A failure in the spark plug immediately translates into misfires, excessive fuel consumption and possible damage to the catalyst or the injection system, compromising the reliability of the boat in navigation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or defective spark plug in a marine engine include difficult or failed starts, rough engine idling, jerking or loss of power while underway, and noticeably higher fuel consumption than usual. As a general preventive maintenance rule, it is recommended to check and replace spark plugs every season or every 100 hours of use in marine engines operating in saline environments, since the electrode and insulator degrade more quickly than in land applications. Replacing spark plugs preventatively before each sailing season prevents unexpected breakdowns away from port and ensures efficient combustion throughout the campaign.
