Description

Function and technical context

The Champion RV12YC spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electric spark that initiates the combustion of the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder of the outboard or stationary petrol engine. Integrated into the ignition system, it works closely with the ignition coil and distributor or CDI module to ensure that each combustion cycle occurs at the exact time and with the appropriate energy. A bad spark plug causes misfires, loss of power, increased fuel consumption and, in severe cases, can cause damage to the piston or combustion chamber due to uncontrolled detonation. Champion's RV12YC reference responds to a specific thermal and mechanical calibration for marine engines, where saline humidity conditions and prolonged work cycles require superior resistance to corrosion and electrode fouling.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or failed spark plug include difficult or failed starts, jerking and loss of speed at low rpm, irregular fuel consumption and black smoke emissions from the exhaust. In marine engines for recreational use, it is recommended to check the spark plugs at the beginning of each season and replace them every 100 hours of navigation or at least annually, since the marine environment accelerates the corrosion of the electrode and the deposit of salts on the insulator. Changing the spark plugs preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and avoids being left without propulsion on the high seas due to an easily anticipated misfire.
