Thru Hull Scupper Naval Bronze 1" (Short v.2)
Description
Function and technical context
A naval bronze thru-hull is the sealing element that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the passage of cooling water, the drainage of bilges, the emptying of scuppers or the outlet of exhaust water, maintaining the structural integrity of the hull at that critical point. Made of naval bronze, a material recognized for its excellent resistance to corrosion in marine environments in both salt and fresh water, this 1-inch, 8.90 cm long thru-hull (short version) adapts to installations where the interior space available between the hull and the frame or bulkhead is reduced. The correct choice of the thru-hull – diameter, length and material – is decisive to guarantee the lasting watertightness of the hull: a damaged, poorly installed thru-hull or one made of inappropriate material can cause uncontrolled entry of water with serious consequences for the safety of the boat.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate the need to check or replace a thru-hull are the appearance of moisture or dripping in the installation area, visible corrosion on the body or thread of the fitting, difficulty in maneuvering the associated bottom valve or deformation of the sealing ring. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls and their seat joints at each annual beaching, checking the condition of the brass, the integrity of the seal with the hull and the correct tightening. Preventively replacing a thru-hull with signs of corrosion or wear before seasonal launching avoids emergency interventions at sea and the risk of leaking water.
