Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull (also known as thru hull or through-hull) is the element that allows controlled communication between the interior of the boat and the outside water, passing through the hull in a watertight manner. In this case, with a measurement of 1/2" and a length of 6.20 cm, it is a compact model especially suitable for installations with little space available in the thickness of the hull. Made of naval bronze, it offers superior resistance to marine corrosion compared to ferrous materials or lower quality alloys, being suitable for both salt and fresh water. Its structural integrity is critical: a damaged or poorly installed thru-hull can cause water to enter the interior of the hull, with the consequent risk of sinking or serious damage to the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a thru-hull needs to be replaced are the appearance of visible vertigo or corrosion on the bronze body, water leaks around the thru-hull, difficulty closing the associated seacock or the presence of cracks in the thread or body of the fitting. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each seasonal beaching, checking the condition of the brass, the sealing with the hull and the correct operation of the corresponding shut-off valve. Replacing a damaged thru-hull preventively during dry maintenance is always easier and cheaper than undertaking an emergency repair with the boat in the water.
