Function and technical context
A thru-hull is the watertight connection element between the inside of the hull and the outside, allowing the passage of cooling, bilge, exhaust or sea intake pipes without compromising the structural integrity of the boat. Made of high-resistance plastic in white, this component works in the boat's fluid management system—whether in the engine cooling water inlet, in the bilge outlet or in seawater circuits. Its dimensions (A=48 mm, B=89 mm, C=41 mm, D=25.4 mm, E=35 mm) make it suitable for standard installations on fiberglass, aluminum or steel hulls where a precise fit and reliable seal are required. A thru-hull in poor condition can cause uncontrolled entry of water into the interior of the hull, with the consequent risk of progressive flooding and serious damage to the boat.
When to replace this part?
The most common signs of deterioration in a plastic thru-hull are the appearance of microcracks or deformations in the body of the component, water leaks around the sealing ring, and difficulty in closing or opening the associated shut-off valve. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the plastic, the joints and the tightness of the fixing nut. Replacing a thru-hull preventively in the event of any sign of fragility or intense discoloration avoids emergency repairs in the water, where a leakage failure can be critical.
