Function and technical context

The thru-hull with spigot is a watertight closure element that is installed in the hull of the boat to allow the passage of hoses from seawater cooling circuits, bilge emptying, drainage systems or engine water intakes, maintaining the structural integrity and watertightness of the hull. Made of white plastic with high resistance to marine corrosion, it is especially suitable for saline environments where metal thru-hulls can suffer electrolytic degradation. With a 1 1/4" thread and 30 mm outlet, it fits standard recreational boat installations and allows direct connection of flexible hoses using the cylindrical barb. Its correct installation, together with a suitable marine sealant, guarantees a watertight joint that prevents water from entering the interior of the hull.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a plastic thru-hull are the appearance of visible microcracks in the body of the spigot or in the thread, slight moisture in the bulkhead or bilge near the installation point, and difficulty in tightening or loosening the locknut due to deformation of the material. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each annual docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the sealant and the absence of play. Replacing a damaged thru-hull preventively, before launching, avoids emergency situations due to the entry of water during navigation that could compromise the safety of the boat.
