Description

Function and technical context

The through-hull with spigot is the element that allows the watertight passage of pipes through the hull of a boat, sealing the opening against the entry of water from the sea or lake. Made of white plastic resistant to marine corrosion, it is especially suitable for installations where lightness and compatibility with fiberglass or polyester hulls are required, avoiding the galvanic electrolysis that would appear with metal accessories in certain combinations of materials. With a 1½" thread and a 38 mm outlet, it is commonly used in water exhaust systems, sea inlets, bilge emptying, external cooling circuits or on-board sanitary water pipes. Poor installation or a damaged part directly compromises the buoyancy of the boat, since any leak through the hull in the area below the waterline can lead to uncontrolled water entry.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of deterioration in a plastic thru-hull are the appearance of microcracks in the body or tang, deformations due to mechanical stress, loss of tightness in the thread or in the seal against the hull, and discoloration or fragility of the material due to prolonged exposure to UV rays and water chemicals. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the tightness of the fixing nuts and the condition of the sealing gaskets. Preventively replacing an aging thru-hull before it fails is a fundamental safety measure: a breakdown during navigation or in port can cause serious damage to the boat and involve a repair cost much higher than that of the part itself.
