Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull with integrated spigot is a naval plumbing accessory that allows you to pass through the hull of the boat in a watertight manner to connect seawater pipes, cooling systems, bilge drains, sea inlets or wet exhaust circuits. The spigot – also called a socket or nipple – is integral with the body of the thru-hull, which eliminates an additional joint and reduces potential leak points below the waterline. Being made of AISI 316 stainless steel, it offers superior resistance to galvanic corrosion and continuous exposure to salt water, being the reference alloy for applications in aggressive marine environments. Its 1½" thread and 45 mm spigot make it suitable for medium-high flow pipes, common in inboard engine cooling intakes, bilge systems or deck drains.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a thru-hull needs to be replaced are: appearance of moisture or dripping in the bilge without apparent origin, visible corrosion on the body or spigot, difficulty in maneuvering the associated shut-off valve or deformation of the seat seal on the hull. On boats that navigate in salt water, it is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each annual beaching or every time the boat is put into dry conditions, checking the state of the sealing, tightness and absence of pits. Replacing a thru-hull when grounded has a minimal cost compared to a water ingress afloat, which can compromise the safety of the crew and the integrity of the boat.
