Description

Function and technical context

This naval bronze male threaded plug acts as a hermetic sealing element in pipes, manifolds and engine or hull blocks where it is required to plug a hole with a 1 1/2" female thread. Its construction in naval bronze - an alloy of copper, zinc and tin with high resistance to marine corrosion - makes it the appropriate solution for permanent installations in direct contact with seawater, fresh water or cooling fluids. It is frequently used in open and closed cooling systems, bottom intakes, emptying and purging circuits, and maintenance access points on outboard, inboard marine engines and auxiliary groups. Their function is critical: a defective closure at these points can cause water to enter the hull or loss of cooling fluid, with the consequent risk of overheating of the engine or partial flooding of the boat.

When to replace this part?

Naval bronze threaded plugs should be inspected at each docking or seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to signs of dezincification (reddish or orange discoloration on the surface of the bronze), galvanic corrosion, deformation of the hexagon or deterioration of the thread that prevents correct tightening. A damaged thread or a plug that has microcracks can cause imperceptible leaks in port that are aggravated by the hydrostatic pressure during navigation. Preventive replacement in the event of any sign of advanced corrosion is the practice recommended by nautical maintenance workshops, since the cost of a plug is minimal compared to that of a breakdown due to water ingress or overheating at sea.
