Function and technical context

This T connection with female thread in its three mouths allows three sections of pipe to be derived or joined at the same point, being an essential structural element in marine plumbing installations on board. It is commonly used in seawater cooling systems, drainage circuits, sanitary systems and auxiliary fuel lines where a watertight and corrosion-resistant branch is required. AISI 316 stainless steel, also known as marine steel due to its high molybdenum content, gives it superior resistance to galvanic corrosion and saltwater chlorides, making it the technically correct choice compared to brass or 304 stainless steel in navigation environments. A failure in this type of fitting—due to cracking, oxidation or leakage in the threads—can lead to water entering the bilge, loss of pressure in the circuit or flooding of closed spaces.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a T-fitting are the appearance of surface rust (punctual pitting), microleaks in the threaded joints that do not yield to retightening, or visible deformation of the body of the fitting due to overpressure or mechanical shock. Although AISI 316 has a long service life, it is recommended that all stainless steel fittings be visually inspected at each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to thread gaskets and seals. Preventively replacing any fitting with signs of intergranular corrosion or passage of water avoids more costly breakdowns and, in the case of cooling or drainage systems, possible navigation emergencies.
